Ecademy’s new membership level changes explained

The last time I blogged about Ecademy I got banned.  But I’m taking on the challenge of explaining its new membership level changes all the same!

This week saw a change to “social business network” Ecademy and its membership levels which caused a bit of a fuss.  Outwardly it looked like a reduction in the price of its entry level premium membership level Power Networker from £9.95 to £4.95 — great news for all (except those who believed they were getting a ‘special’ by paying only £9.95 a month rather than the previously advertised price of £14.95 a month).  So what was the fuss?  The reduced price waved in a paring back of what those members are allowed to do — and Ecademy tried to force the new restrictions on existing and fully paid up Power Networkers, all of whom had paid the higher price for a year’s subscription.

You can read some of the backlash here in the blog article on Ecademy “Ecademy tries to redefine English law of contract“.

Ecademy CEO Glenn Watkins was forced into a climb down and apology (read his riposte of “Intention and outcome – a change of heart and membership levels” on his Ecademy blog here) and existing Power Networkers were reinstated with all the rights they signed up to, but with NEW Power Networkers on the restricted version of that membership.  Confused?  Let me clear it up.
